Holy Week & Easter 2017

Holy Week & Easter 2017

Services at All Saints’
Thursday 13 April – Sunday 16 April.

Please join us for these most moving and important days in the church’s year, when we follow Jesus on the way to the cross through Holy Week and celebrate his rising again on Easter day.

Maundy Thursday

Solemn Mass of the Lord’s Supper with footwashing
7.30pm, Thursday 13 April

Solemn Mass of the Lord’s Supper
On this night before he died, Christ shared bread and wine with his closest disciples and instituted a new covenant of love.
As Jesus washed his disciples feet on that night, 12 of us will have our feet washed as a symbol of the Christian call to be servants to one another.
At the end of the mass, the altar is stripped, to recall the humiliating stripping of Christ’s body by the soldiers.
When the mass is ended, the side altar becomes a place of meditation and prayer to accompany Jesus on the night he suffered in the Garden of Gethsemene.
The church remains open until midnight for anyone who wishes to keep a time in silent vigil with Christ.

Good Friday

Solemn Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion
10.30am, Friday 14 April

We hear a simple, beautiful and moving retelling of the events that led to Jesus’ death, through St John’s passion – sung in Gregorian chant.
A narrator sings the story while another sings the words of Jesus, and a third sings all other persons in the passion.
When the story of Christ’s passion is finished, we show our love for Jesus by honouring the symbol of his sacrifice, the cross.
Many kiss the feet of the wooden crucifix, while others simply touch their hands to the wood in prayer.
The service ends in silence as the people depart – bereft, with Christ left in the tomb.

Holy Saturday

The Great Vigil of Easter
7.30pmSaturday 15 April

We celebrate this most holy night with the lighting of the new fire of Easter, symbolising the fire of God’s love.
We light the paschal candle to burn with the light of Christ at the heart of our community throughout the next year.
We hear the Exultet, the ancient hymn of the resurrection, which has been sung on this night since the earliest times of the church.
We fill the church with the light of Christ as our small candles are lit from the paschal candle.
We honour God’s triumph in the words of the Gloria and ring in the joy of the resurrection with bells. BYO!
We celebrate the first Mass of Easter.

Followed by potluck party with Easter eggs and cake.

Easter Morning Festal Mass

10.30am, Sunday 16 April

Join us for a festal high mass with families on Easter Sunday morning.
